Cherokee Nation History and Preservation
This Day in Cherokee Nation History: October 24, 1804 - Treaty of Tellico made between the Cherokee and the United States, sometimes referred to as the "Lost Cherokee Treaty." Although the treaty was made in 1804, the copy retained by the United States was lost and not ratified for almost 20 years. When the Cherokee produced a copy of the treaty, it was ratified and finally proclaimed on May 17, 1824. The Cherokees ceded 86,400 acres in Georgia, and were paid $5,000 in goods and cash and a $1,000 annuity.
