This Day in Cherokee Nation History: October 21, 1829 - General Sam Houston (also known as "the Raven") is formally adopted by the Western Cherokee, or "Old Settlers," and is granted all the rights, privileges and immunities of native Cherokees. During Houston's time with the Cherokee he traveled to Washington, DC as a representative, ran a trading post near Cantonment Gibson and married a Cherokee woman, Diana (Tiana) Rogers.
