Spectracell: Complete micronutrient profile (vitamins, Minerals,Protein, Etc)

My son is an ER doctor in California. He has recently been studying Wellness medicine. He is a strong Christian man (Praise God!), and although he feels the Lord has gifted him with saving lives in the ER, he is now very interested in preventing illness in the first place. He suggested that I get a blood test from Spectracell. Here's some information about the lab and I've given the link to their web site at the very end. After getting my results, I just can't recommend this test enough, whether you are currently suffering from a chronic condition, minor aches and pains, or in great health -- the information from this lab is so valuable! From this lab (Spectracell) you can get a complete report that tells you exactly what your vitamin, minerals, amino acid, lipids, and other nutrient (CoQ10, NAC, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, etc) levels are. It is a blood test and they isolate the lymph cells and place each cell into a broth, and watch the cell "perform." It reveals how much of the vitamins, etc that you take or in your diet are actually ABSORBED into your cells! (not just floating in your blood stream).

I've done this test. I consider myself a very healthy, active, female of 55 years old. I was extremely surprised to see that I am actually deficient in two minor nutrients, because I take several vitamins a day! I also learned that I don't "methylate" -- (a genetic disorder that 99% of doctors never investigate... so how could I have known?). Being able to methylate is VITAL. I now take methylated folate, and it has corrected my body's inability to perform this function... but I never would have known, and probably would have declined in health as I get older.

Read the section about Telomeres toward the end. These are the "ends" of your DNA strands that determine your cell age. THEY CAN BE LENGTHENED AND CAN REVERSE AGING!! What are telomeres?

Telomeres are sections of DNA at the end of each chromosome that serve as a cap to your genetic material. Every time a cell replicates, its telomere will become shorter. Shorter telomeres imply a shorter life span for a cell.

What effect does telomere length have on my health and wellness?

Age adjusted telomere length is the best method to date to assess biological age using structural analysis of chromosomal change in the telomere. Serial evaluation of telomere length is an indicator of how rapidly one ages relative to a normal population. Therapies directed at slowing the loss of telomere length may slow aging and age-related diseases.

Does diet have any effect on telomere length and repair?

An inflammatory diet, or one that increases oxidative stress, will shorten telomeres faster. This would include refined carbohydrates, fast foods, processed foods, sodas, artificial sweeteners, trans fats and saturated fats. A diet with a large amount and variety of antioxidants that improves oxidative defense and reduces oxidative stress will slow telomere shortening. Consumption of 10 servings of fresh and relatively uncooked fruits and vegetables, mixed fiber; monounsaturated fats, omega-3 fatty acids, cold water fish and high quality vegetable proteins can prevent premature shortening. In addition, caloric restriction is advised combined with an exercise program. Fasting for 12 hours each night at least 4 days per week may also be protective.

What lifestyle modifications are likely to be helpful?

One should achieve ideal body weight and body composition with low body fat (less than 22% for women and less than 16% for men). Decreasing visceral fat is very important. Regular aerobic and resistance exercise for at least one hour per day, sleeping for at least 8 hours per night, stress reduction, discontinuation of all tobacco products and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may decrease the rate of telomere loss.

How do you measure telomere length?

The Patient Telomere Score is calculated based on the patient's telomere length on white blood cells (T-lymphocytes). This is the average compared to telomere length on lymphocytes from a sample of the American population in the same age range. The higher the telomere score, the "younger" the cells. A Telomere Score that is above the average line is desirable.

What can I do to reduce my rate of telomere loss?

Shorter telomeres have been associated with metabolic abnormalities, obesity and several degenerative diseases including cancer, dementia and cardiovascular disease. In vitro studies have shown that telomeres are highly susceptible to oxidative stress, which will shorten telomere length and enhance cellular aging. Minimizing associated risk factors that are linked to shortened telomere activity is recommended and include:
•Reduce oxidative stress
•Correct micronutrient deficiencies, especially vitamin D
•Change sedentary lifestyle/increase physical activity
•Avoid weight gain or obesity
•Correct insulin resistance

Studies have shown that telomere length is strongly associated with CVD risk, nutritional deficiencies (particularly antioxidants) and cancer and testing may be a useful biomarker for risk assessment.

What test is required and how do we get it done?

Go to the web site for Spectracell and fill out the information. They will direct you to a clinician and a blood draw center. It takes a little over 2 weeks to get your results. They are easy to interpret -- or you can call Spectracell and they will help you. Plus!, then if you need, they will even design a suppliment specifically compounded to restore your deficiencies and specific needs.

Also, if you are asking about the 23andMe, to test your genetic profile (DNA), it is extremely easy. You go onto the site, order the kit ($99.00), and it arrives about 4 days later. You spit into the test tube, follow their instructions, and put it into the carton they provide to return it to them. DNA takes a while to test, so don't expect your results for 6 - 8 weeks. But you can even include yourself on the Ancestry forum and make your results public (or you can select to keep your information private)... if public, then other people who also have been tested will be linked and shown to be related to you in some way -- pretty WILD! I have done it (only recently, don't have my results yet), but I selected to keep my information private (really don't want people coming out of the woodwork asking for hand-outs... I'm a little cautious right now, in the event of new wealth :p). Please feel free to post any questions on this. I have learned SO MUCH doing this. AND... I will say, just from changing ONE of my nutrients, I have not had a Migraine this month, and I normally get migraines on a cyclic basis that last 3 days. Therostrom, Thank you SO MUCH for that valuable information. I'm an avid researcher and I will definitely check it out. If I order, I will go through you for sure! I believe that I recently read through this research and studies for ProductB, as you can read the exact ingredients in any medical invention when they apply for a patent -- and not realizing that this product is available for sale, I have purchased SEVERAL of the ingredients and taking the dose they got results from on their research subjects (but it's a lot of pills to take daily, when you take them individually).

Also, my father has had progressive peripheral neuropathy, to the point that he cannot use his hands and NO DOCTORS have been able to diagnose the cause, therefore, he is now addicted to Vicodan.
