Team One Spirit, also known as the Lakota Five, returned to the New York City marathon on November 2 with one goal: To raise enough money to build youth centers on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The team wants to provide safe havens for all Lakota youth.
In 2013, the team was invited back to the marathon after Hurricane Sandy ended their opportunity to race in 2012. Last year, the team exceeded their goal to raise copy8,000; earning more than $20,000. This year, they raised $2330 toward their goal of copy5,000, according to CrowdRise.com. The five members who participated were: Alex Wilson, Nupa White Plume, James Pine, Zuya White Plume and Kelsey Good Lance.
Their unofficial results were posted on NativeProgress.org:
Alex Wilson finished the marathon in 03:43:27
Nupa White Plume finished in 03:44:38
James Pine finished in 03:52:31
Zuya White Plume finished in 03:52:44
Kelsey Good Lance finished in 04:04:31
The New York Times reported that Wilson Kipsang of Kenya won this year's race. He finished in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 59 seconds — the slowest winning time in New York since 1995, and more than 7 1/2 minutes off the world record he set just over a year ago in Berlin, the Associated Press said.
