I have been mulling over in my mind how I was going to structure and present this story, this section or chapter in my life.
Without question many will doubt, many will say, yeah right, many others will fail to hear what is being said, and will not recognize the heart that is woven into this “story”. I weep for them.
Have to admit, I never in my worst nightmare ever saw this coming. For whatever reason it did not “connect” in my head: All three of my Uncles on my Mothers’ side had died of prostate / colon cancers. My own Father died at a relatively young age of an extremely aggressive prostate cancer. My wifes's Mom & Dad both died of Cancer and then 8 years ago, I lost my bride of 32 years, “Kandie” to another very aggressive cancer, with all of that death and loss, I never saw it coming for me.
It all began simple enough. In January of 2013 I came down with a horrible bug. Kind of like a flu, but not really. It hung on for six weeks. A little cough that would not go away. Feeling lousy. Then I began to retain water. Within 6 weeks I gained over 45 lbs! had no idea what was going on. Every part of my body was bloated. I could no longer drive, (Could not fit behind the wheel of my truck!) The stairs up to my home were like climbing Mt Everest! It was definitely “See a doctor time”
Well, the “cause” was determined to be a conflict between two meds I was on. The matter was discovered, and resolved with strong diuretics, I lost 60 lbs of water in 30 days. (From 293 down to 233) BUT I was still not able to pee properly. I was referred to a kidney specialist. His diagnosis was Chronic Kidney Disease, brought on by high blood pressure, onset Type 2 Diabetes, and “getting old” (I was 59 at the time). He changed my diuretic and sent me on my way. (He said there was no cure and dialysis would probably follow a few years down the line)
WHAT I DID NOT KNOW WAS MY BODY WAS TRYING TO TELL ME SOMETHING! MY BODY WAS LITERALLY SCREAMING AT ME: SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG DUDE!!!!
My mind began to play with me: Is this how it is going to be? Gradual degradation of quality of life, and then lights out?
The good news is that I had the OOM Family, A Very Special & a very unique, life tested and experienced “MOD TEAM” The entire OOM site, most all the members, the MOD Team, are very devout Christians. I was able to share openly with them what was happening. The prayers began, and so did the volunteering of information, and possible “alternative methods” of dealing with my physical condition.
From that incredible support, adding to my ardent desire to live, and extremely positive attitude (I will address the importance of “attitude” a little later) I began to inquire online, Google search items that had been suggested as a course of action, and from there found a whole new world that I did not know even existed.
In the meantime, I thought everything was going well. I had lost all the extra weight, and even dropped on down to 220 lbs. Felt better than I had in years. Was able to wear clothes that had hung in the closet for Lord knows how long. My singing was better than ever, performing in Waikiki 2-3 times a week. Life was good. The hammer was coming!

In August of 2013, the issue with NOT being able to pee returned. I also noticed that in my straining to pee, that on some occasions I would pass something semi-solid. They were blood clots. I charged them off to having done some heavy lifting the day before.

This continued, the passing of clots continued, I kept telling myself, it will pass, heal itself.

Sometime in October of 2013, still having the pee problems, I suddenly, like in one night, became incontinent while sleeping. I could not believe it! What a shock to me, my “manliness” and my Self-esteem! Here I am just 60 years old, out looking for depends, and extra pads. It was freaking embarrassing!
Now, most idiots would have gone back to the doctor by now, This idiot did not. WHY? No insurance. I have limited fixed income from renting rooms in my home, and had convinced myself that I could not “afford” to seek medical treatment.

There came a day in February of 2014 that I could no longer pee much at all, in fact what I was able to pass was getting very red in color. I had constant pain in my lower abdominal area. Finally bit the bullet and when back to the kidney specialist. Well, he did a sonogram, and determined I had once again significant water retention, and it was destroying my kidneys, he said the only fix was an immediate trip to ER to have a Foley Catheter inserted. If I did not, my bladder may burst, or my kidneys, or both.
Long story short, There was an Urologist in the same building that was able to do the procedure, It was extremely painful, but I also drained nearly a full GALLON of water. ….with multiple huge blood clots. The doctor did a digital prostate exam, and said I had a problem.
The first issue was eliminating the massive bladder infection. That was controlled. The next issue was supposed to be a biopsy on the prostate. I never made it that far. The bleeding a few weeks later increased to the point where I collapsed from loss of blood, and ended up in ER. My son was called and given emergency leave from the Army, flown immediately home to Honolulu. Initial prognosis was NOT GOOD! TRUTH? I DAMN NEAR DIED!
The Urologist said the only way to stop the bleeding was to perform a TURP. Trans-urethral resection of the Prostate. (Look it up) I consented. 4 units of blood later, the procedure, 6 days in the hospital, The bleeding had stopped. BUT….. they had also done the biopsy at the same time.
The results: STAGE IV PROSTATE CANCER. NOT CURABLE, NOT OPERABLE. RADIATION AND CHEMO WERE ONLY HOPES OF EXTENDING LIFE. DOC SAID 2-YEARS TO 10 ….MAYBE.
Now, this is where “attitude” comes into play. Correct, positive, attitude is 90% of winning any medical battle, and many of life’s’ other battles as well.
This is where my training and conditioning as a Force Recon Marine, and my Faith in Almighty God, melded into one very powerful, determined, and invincible force. All Glory goes to GOD, all of my life experiences had conditioned me for this battle. AND IT WAS GAME ON!
Once again I shared with the wonderful OOM Family, and with the OOM Mod Team. Once again the prayer warriors went to battle. Many more that I will never know also began to pray. It was so humbling, and at the same time comforting, and more importantly inspiring to know so many cared, and were helping me to “fight the good fight”.
Ok, so it is game time, now what? My son was able to get me signed up for a State of Hawaii program of medical coverage called HMSA-Quest. That in and of itself was a major miracle. This coverage paid for EVERYTHING! No-co pays, no drug costs, no doctor bills, no hospital bills, nothing. 100% coverage!!! AND on top of that…… no monthly plan payments either. Talk about removing a burden from my shoulders!!!!!
I met with Mele, she is the # 1 Naturopathic Healer in the State of Hawaii. She had actually told me of the cancer before the doctors confirmed it. Her machine provided a reading of -25 specific to prostate issues. In lay men terms, that reading translates to ‘DUDE…..YOU HAVE SOME SERIOUS CANCER ISSUES” Mele put together an assortment of “Detox” and Immune system support supplements that I began to use immediately.
In the meantime, I contacted Stuart Solomon. Lifelong friend, we both lost our brides to cancer, but Stu was able to keep his alive for 10 years longer than the doctors thought possible, and with Quality Life to boot. I tested my water, sodas, beers, milk, everything, and found so much acidic stuff it made me sick to think about it. EVERYTHING I TESTED PRODUCED RESULTS IN THE RANGE OF 5.0-5.5 TOTALLY ACIDIC, AND CANCER LOVES AN ACIDIC ENVIRONMENT!
I began the baking soda protocol:
½ teaspoon of pure baking soda (NOT BAKING POWDER!!!!) and 8 oz of 11.5 pH Kangen water. Mixed well and drink it down 3-4 times a day.

The Urologist said the only way to stop the bleeding was to perform a TURP. Trans-urethral resection of the Prostate. (Look it up) I consented. 4 units of blood later, the procedure, 6 days in the hospital, The bleeding had stopped. BUT….. they had also done the biopsy at the same time.

Here is what I did, in addition to all the supplements, I bought 79 CENTS worth of baking soda and $20 worth of litmus test strips for urine and saliva. I tested myself and found I was @ 5.50 pH!!!! I tested my water, sodas, beers, milk, everything, and found so much acidic stuff it made me sick to think about it. EVERYTHING I TESTED PRODUCED RESULTS IN THE RANGE OF 5.0-5.5 TOTALLY ACIDIC, AND CANCER LOVES AN ACIDIC ENVIRONMENT!
I began the baking soda protocol:
½ teaspoon of pure baking soda (NOT BAKING POWDER!!!!) and 8 oz of 11.5 pH Kangen water. Mixed well and drink it down 3-4 times a day.
I continued to test my pee and saliva multiple times a day, and saw how eating and WHAT I ate reduced the pH levels, and how drinking the baking soda / water combo increased it. Over time I was and have been able to maintain my nightly sleep time pH to over 7.5 – 8.0
