Making human blood from skin cells (mostly for soldiers injured in war)

Post  LuvDinar on Sun May 19, 2013 2:40 pm

On November 7, 2010, a team at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, published work in the journal Nature outlining how they had turned human skin cells into blood cells in the lab. Team members did it by taking samples of skin, extracting cells called fibroblasts, virally inserting a new gene (OCT4) into the cells' DNA and then growing the cells in a mix of immune-stimulating proteins called cytokines. The technique was hailed as a great achievement because unlike prior work demonstrating that skin cells could be turned into other cells, this technique did NOT require a middle step of returning the cells into an embryonic-type state, thereby bypassing many safety issues.

First, it could mean that in a foreseeable future people needing blood for surgery, cancer treatment, or treatment for other blood conditions like anemia will be able to have blood CREATED from just a patch of their own skin to provide transfusions.

McMaster University began clinical trials in 2012. This technique could extend well beyond blood! It may be possible to make many types of cells from skin. They have encouraging evidence from their research.

The reason this is such a HUGE advancement for injured soldiers, in particular, is because human blood has a short shelf life (which is difficult to maintain an adequate supply in war zone MASH units), and they have to carry so many different blood types. The blood they are creating for this purpose is universal and has a nearly indefinite shelf life.

I will post later on wonderful stem cell advancements -- from ADULT stem cells -- that many of the dinarians who currently have issues that could be resolved and potentially completely cured with stem cell therapy, because for the first time we will be able to afford repairing joints, eyes, livers, hearts, lungs, etc FOREVER.

LOVE TO ALL! Without our health, what good is our wealth......
