Wisdom of the Elders! As 2015 starts with the usual “out with the old, in with the new” refrain, taking some time honored advice from our precious Elders helps to keep us centered and balanced. Need some inspiration to start the new year strong? Try these wise words!

1) GIVING AND GRATITUDE:

“It was our belief that the love of possessions is a weakness to be overcome. . . . Children must early learn the beauty of generosity. They are taught to give what they prize most, that they may taste the happiness of giving. . . . The Indians in their simplicity literally give away all that they have—to relatives, to guests of other tribes or clans, but above all to the poor and the aged, from whom they can hope for no return.”
― Charles Alexander Eastman, (Santee Dakota),(later named Ohíye S’a; February 19, 1858 – January 8, 1939)

2) POSITIVE SELF-IMAGE:

“One of the things my parents taught me, and I’ll always be grateful as a gift, is to not ever let anybody else define me; that for me to define myself . . . and I think that helped me a lot in assuming a leadership position.”
― Wilma Mankiller, (Cherokee), Mankiller: A Chief and Her People

3) RESPECTING OURSELVES AND OTHERS:

Each man is good in His sight. It is not necessary for eagles to be crows.
–Sitting Bull, (Hunkpapa Lakota), (c. 1831 – December 15, 1890)

4) HONORING THE EARTH:

The earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it.
–Chief Joseph, (Nez Perce), (March 3, 1840 – September 21, 1904)

5) LEARNING AND PRESERVING OUR LANGUAGES:

“Language and culture cannot be separated. Language is vital to understanding our unique cultural perspectives. Language is a tool that is used to explore and experience our cultures and the perspectives that are embedded in our cultures.”

–Buffy Sainte Marie, (Cree)

6) LIVING LIFE IN A GOOD WAY:

“While living, I want to live well.”

—Geronimo/Goyaałé ,(Apache), (June 1829 – February 17, 1909)

7) DISCOVERING POWER IN OUR CULTURE:

“One of our people in the Native community said the difference between white people and Indians is that Indian people know they are oppressed but don’t feel powerless. White people don’t feel oppressed, but feel powerless. Deconstruct that disempowerment. Part of the mythology that they’ve been teaching you is that you have no power. Power is not brute force and money; power is in your spirit. Power is in your soul. It is what your ancestors, your old people gave you. Power is in the earth; it is in your relationship to the earth.”
― Winona LaDuke, (Mississippi Band Anishinaabeg)

Cool PROTECTING OUR LAND:

“We, the great mass of the people think only of the love we have for our land, we do love the land where we were brought up. We will never let our hold to this land go, to let it go it will be like throwing away (our) mother that gave (us) birth.”. – Letter from Aitooweyah to John Ross, Principal Chief of the Cherokee.

9)UNITY IS OUR STRENGTH:

“A single twig breaks, but the bundle of twigs is strong.” —Tecumseh,(Shawnee),(March 1768? – 5 October 1813)

10) DON’T GET DISCOURAGED!

“Another thing is, people lose perspective. It is a cultural trait in America to think in terms of very short time periods. My advice is: learn history. Take responsibility for history. Recognise that sometimes things take a long time to change. If you look at your history in this country, you find that for most rights, people had to struggle. People in this era forget that and quite often think they are entitled, and are weary of struggling over any period of time”
― Winona LaDuke, (Mississippi Band Anishinaabeg)
